Southlake DPS is a dedicated, world class department based on the foundation of trust.  We do this by continuing to achieve the highest standards of safety and security for our citizens and those who conduct business in the city.

History of Southlake DPS

The City of Southlake began providing police service in 1956 and fire service in 1966. Each department protected a small community of 4,000 people through the early 1970s. As the city continued to grow, so did each department. In 1984 a combination paid and volunteer department was formed to provide additional services to our growing community. Southlake experienced large growth in the late 1980s that demanded a larger, more involved public safety unit to provide services to Southlake's 23 square miles. The City of Southlake consolidated police, fire, and communications into a Department of Public Safety in October 1990. Today, Southlake DPS is composed of Fire Services, Police Services, and Support Services. Under the leadership of the Director of Public Safety, the three divisions currently staff over 100 employees serving a community of approximately 26,500 citizens.

How Do We Operate?

The Department of Public Safety is lead by a Director. The Fire Services Division is led by a Fire Chief and the Police Services Division by a Police Chief. The Department of Public Safety currently operates out of two facilities (Headquarters and West).

Within Fire Services, the Prevention, Emergency Medical Services, and Operations divisions work to ensure the safety of Southlake residents. Within Police Services, the Patrol and Criminal Investigations Divisions enhance the Police Services' relationship with the community. Within Support Services, Professional StandardsEmergency Management, and Records Divisions provide administrative, analytical, and emergency preparedness assistance to the Department of Public Safety.

The Department of Public Safety workforce strives to maintain the values that continue to make Southlake an attractive, vibrant, safe, healthy, and fiscally sound community that epitomizes both economic and environmental sustainability.
